Today in the NFL - Week 14

Sunday, Dec 7, 2008 at 12:00 pm ET

Here's what's happening in the NFL today.

Atogwe a priority

Safety Oshiomogho Atogwe, who is an unrestricted free agent after the season, will be one of the Rams' top priorities in the offseason, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

Fantasy Analysis

Atogwe is one of the better free safeties in the league, and is always around the ball. Along with his 63 tackles, Atogwe has forced five fumbles, recovered two, scored on one of the recoveries, and picked off four passes.

Bailey will not play

Denver will do without Champ Bailey on Sunday against the Chiefs, as they are expected to deactivate him, according to Adam Schefter of NFL.com.

Fantasy Analysis

That should certainly make things easier for Chiefs wide receiver Dwayne Bowe, along with quarterback Tyler Thigpen.

Barron won't start

Rams offensive tackle Alex Barron will not start for the team after being late for a team meeting, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

Fantasy Analysis

Adam Goldberg will start at right tackle in Barron's stead. The team shouldn't miss much, except for one of Barron's numerous false-start penalties.

Cable upset with Russell for no-show

Raiders quarterback JaMarcus Russell was scheduled to do in interview with the NFL Network before the team's game on Thursday, but blew it off, much to the dismay of head coach Tom Cable, according to the San Francisco Chronicle."I think it's a big deal and it does concern me," Cable said.

Fantasy Analysis

A former No. 1 overall pick, Russell has performed like anything but. He has no fantasy value now, and it's difficult to see where he will anytime soon.

Coles rips Favre

Jets wideout Laveranues Coles doesn't seem to be a big fan of quarterback Brett Favre, reports the San Francisco Chronicle. According to the paper, Coles had plenty to say on the veteran QB, such as "I catch balls from the Jugs machine. The ball probably comes out harder from there than it does from anywhere else," and "Of course he's the big name, he's the Hall of Famer, he's going to get the majority of the credit but most of the guys who deserve the credit don't really get it."

Fantasy Analysis

Coles is upset due to his lack of involvement in the offense, but he does have 55 catches for 615 yards and six scores. Coles has a pretty good matchup with San Francisco today, but based on these comments, we're not so sure Favre will be looking at Coles in his first read.

Grove will return

Raiders center Jake Grove will return to the team next week after he missed the last four with a calf injury, according to the San Francisco Chronicle.

Fantasy Analysis

Grove starts at center for the team, so his return should help open a few holes for Justin Fargas and Darren McFadden.

Marinelli could return?

It is possible that the Detroit Lions will retain head coach Rod Marinelli, even if the team goes 0-16, according to MLive.com.

Fantasy Analysis

We realize owner William Clay Ford has a reputation for loyalty, and that's a trait we admire, but at some point you have to listen to your fans. And that would seem to start with ridding yourself of a coach who went winless (if in fact that happens).

McGahee experiencing migranes?

Running back Willis McGahee has reportedly been struggling with migranes, according to FOXSports.com.

Fantasy Analysis

McGahee practiced fully Friday, but his lack of production (16 carries for 28 yards) in the last two games - and the three-headed RBBC in Baltimore - makes him an extremely risky play in Week 1 of the fantasy playoffs.

Portis will play

Washington running back Clinton Portis is going to play against the Ravens, even though he sat out practices this week, according to Adam Schefter of NFL.com.

Fantasy Analysis

Portis does not have a great matchup, and he is dealing with numerous bumps and bruises, so if you have another quality option for your fantasy team, it may be wise to use it.

Rams want to retain Bartell

Re-signing cornerback Ron Bartell this offseason will be a priority for the Rams, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

Fantasy Analysis

The former second-round pick is a solid cover corner who gets little notice because of the team's poor record.
