Hey, Hey, Hey...Goodbye JaMarcus Russell

I haven't been a big Raiders fan lately but I applaud their decision today to let JaMarcus Russell go. After three years, Russell hasn't managed to live up to any of the expectations surrounding his number 1 draft position. Russell cost the Raiders $39 million dollars and was only able to come up with 7 wins as a starter.

JaMarcus RussellThe writing has been on the wall. Less than two weeks ago, the Raiders acquired Jason Campbell from the Redskins which was the final nail in the JaMarcus Russell coffin. Oakland wasn't bringing Campbell in to sit on the sidelines.

While Russell will be gone from our immediate awareness, he'll never be gone from footall lore. His name will always be mentioned with the likes of Steve Emtman and Ryan Leaf. The name JaMarcus Russell will always be synonymous with the word "bust".

I've registered my disappointment about Russell several times over the past two seasons here on the FFN Blog. In fact, he's the only player I've ever really had harsh words for. I just could never understand how someone could let such an incredible opportunity pass him by. He'd show up to camp overweight and never give 110%. It's hard to get your team to follow you when you aren't committed in the first place. That's what angered me the most. Give me the opportunity to play in the NFL. I don't have his talent but I have more heart than he'll ever have.

There has been no word yet on whether or not another NFL team has any interest in him.
