2023 Season Outlooks

Mostert is back with the Dolphins this season, and he could still be the best running back in Miami. But he now has more competition aside from just Jeff Wilson after the Dolphins drafted De'Von Achane in Round 3. Mostert, Wilson and Achane will likely compete for touches, and it could be frustrating if everyone stays healthy. But that's been a problem for Mostert, although he played 16 games in 2022. He finished with a solid campaign, leading Miami in carries (181) and rushing yards (891) while also averaging 4.9 yards per carry, catching 31 passes and scoring five total touchdowns. He also had five games with at least 16 PPR points. But Mostert is 31, and Achane and Wilson will most likely get drafted ahead of Mostert in Fantasy leagues due to perceived upside. Mostert, who could be fantastic value with a late-round pick, may still be the preferred option for coach Mike McDaniel, and if Mostert stays healthy, he might end up as the best running back for the Dolphins again in 2023.

Coming off a career year, Mostert signed a fresh two-year deal in March. Miami re-signed Jeff Wilson to a similar two-year deal… and then used a Round 3 pick on speed back Devon Achane.

Now 31, Mostert isn’t a priority target in 2023 drafts.

What We Learned Last YearMostert missed almost all of the 2021 season with a torn meniscus. His injury luck improved in 2022, as he missed only one regular season game (knee).Mostert did suffer a fractured thumb in Week 18, costing him the Wild Card matchup vs. Buffalo.2022 turned up career highs in carries (181), rushing yards (891), receptions (31), and receiving yards (202). The veteran finished as a top-12 PPR RB four times; a top-24 RB five times.Among 33 RBs with 150+ carries, Mostert ranked seventh in yards per carry, seventh in yards after contact per attempt, and fourth in Pro Football Focus Elusive Rating. Impressive finishes, especially in an age-30 season.Mostert took a hit when Miami traded a fifth-round pick for Jeff Wilson. In five healthy games together, Wilson out-carried Mostert 66-45. Both guys handled 19 targets.Mostert saw four total goal line carries – three fewer than Wilson.Overall, Miami ranked 25th in run rate in year one under McDaniel. They sat 31st in total rush attempts.
What to Expect in 2023Raheem Mostert, 31, returned this offseason on a two-year deal. Wilson, however, signed a deal worth slightly more in guaranteed money ($2.645 million vs. $2.2 million).Miami held only four picks in 2023 draft… yet spent a Round 3 selection on speed back Devon Achane. At ~190 pounds, Achane isn’t a serious threat on early downs. But he is a talented pass catcher and figures to hold a receiving role in year one. In other words: Mostert is a long-shot to catch another 30+ passes.Miami returns all of their key offensive personnel from 2022, including HC Mke McDaniel, OC Frank Smith, QB Tua Tagovailoa and WRs Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle. No significant upgrades were made along the O-line. This unit was just OK last year, ranking 21st in ESPN’s Run Block Win Rate.Look for Miami’s run rate to remain relatively low in 2023.

Mostert re-signed with Miami during the offseason and the veteran is expected to share the backfield with Jeff Wilson Jr., as he did once Wilson was acquired last season. The duo played five full games together in 2022, with Mostert handling 44 carries (42% team share) and 15 targets (10%). That allowed only 48 fantasy points (9.5 per game). Mostert is an elite rusher (his career 5.38 YPC is fourth best in NFL history among RBs with 300-plus attempts), but durability is a major concern. He's played more than 11 games in a season twice in his career (2019, 2022) and he's also one of the league's oldest backs (31) and not much of a factor in the passing game (89 career targets). Mostert will be an underwhelming flex with Wilson and speedy rookie Devon Achane in the mix.
