2022 Season Outlooks

The Texans' second-round pick was diagnosed with Leukemia when training camp started and has been ruled out for all of 2022. Our hope is that he recovers fully and makes his debut in 2023. For two years, Metchie was a steady contributor for Alabama, racking up over 2,000 yards and 14 touchdowns in 26 games. He's not a big guy, nor is he a burner, and he's had an unfair share of injuries since 2020, but he was considered one of the best route-runners in the draft and accentuated that trait with his after-catch elusiveness. If he returns to form, the Texans figure to specialize his work out of the slot and potentially load him up with as many as five catches per game. His value is in long-term Dynasty leagues, where patient Fantasy managers can take him with a top-30 pick in rookie-only drafts.
Coming off an ACL tear, Metchie is unlikely to achieve much year 1 value. Longer term, though, Metchie landed in a fine spot to produce as a WR3+. Brandin Cooks is signed for 2 more seasons, but Houston lacks any established threat behind the veteran. The ‘Bama standout has the skill set and high character to forecast a year 2 jump. Just keep rookie-year expectations in check alongside wild card Davis Mills.
Metchie was selected by Houston in the second round of April's draft. Metchie emerged as one of Alabama's top targets in 2021, posting a 96-1142-8 receiving line while handling 24% of the team targets. He spent half his time in the slot (47% of routes) and was mostly used in the short area (8.4 aDOT). He's on the small side and not overly fast or athletic, but he's a terrific route runner and profiles as a slot man in the pros. Metchie tore his ACL in December, so his recovery is something we'll need to monitor, and could cost him a few early-season games. Once healthy, expect him to soak up targets while working between Brandin Cooks and Nico Collins. He has a shot to emerge as a PPR flex option in the second half of 2022.
Rookie second-round pick, John Metchie III will likely miss the 2022 season due to a recent announcement of him having a form of Leukemia called APL (Acute Promyelocytic Leukemia). The hope is that he will be able to play with it without cause for concern, or perhaps even be cured. The time off will also allow him to fully recover from a torn left ACL that he suffered in early December 2021. When he is able to return, he brings a 6'0, 195 pound frame to the game and is capable of playing the Z-receiver role or slot. While he is an above-average route-runner and can gain good separation on his routes, he struggles to be a force when it comes to contact with defenders. He is best used when he can receive the ball in space where he can run after the catch or have minimal on-the-ball contact. The goal is for him to be able to play in the 2023 season.
