This news comes not long after it was reported the Cowboys put in a request to speak with their former offensive coordinator. The Eagles face the Rams on Sunday in the NFC Divisional Round, but Moore will make time to sit down with his former team before then. Long considered to be a popular candidate to replace Mike McCarthy as the Cowboys' head coach, Moore already as a rapport with several members of the Cowboys' offense, including Dak Prescott and CeeDee Lamb. During his four-year run with with the Cowboys' Moore's offense ranked eighth in EPA per play and fourth in success rate. The Cowboys have other candidates on the radar, but Moore should remain an early favorite for the gig until things have a chance to play out a bit.

So McCarthy becomes a coaching free agent after five seasons in Dallas. He went 49-35 with the Cowboys, making the playoffs in three of five years. McCarthy is expected to draw interest from multiple teams, including the Saints and Bears, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport. The Cowboys, meanwhile, join the list of teams that will have a new coaching staff in 2025. They have QB Dak Prescott and WR CeeDee Lamb signed through 2028
Things felt as if they were trending in this direction after Cowboys owner Jerry Jones praised McCarthy's efforts late in the year despite the lost season. The fact McCarthy wasn't dismissed by Jones immediately after the season ended was also a good sign for the veteran head coach. McCarthy's contract with the team is set to officially expire on January 14th, giving the Cowboys little time to get a deal done before McCarthy is free to speak with other teams. McCarthy has led the Cowboys to a 49-35 record during his first five seasons, but had three-straight 12-win seasons from 2021-2023. The team has work to do on the defensive side of the, but with Dak Prescott and CeeDee Lamb under long-term deals, the offensive weapons are there to make the Cowboys a contender again in 2025.
