Where To Draft: Roy Williams

Wednesday, Jul 14, 2010 at 12:00 pm ET

Roy Williams came into the NFL a top flight wide out from Texas. Detroit had a string of first round wide receivers drafted including Mike Williams from USC and Charles Rogers from Michigan State. To me he has exceeded both of those two flops, but isn't a top flight receiver, even in the Cowboys passing attack.

He's got the biggest name of probably the lowest draft pick in this year's fantasy draft. The question I hear is, 'Is Roy done?' Well to me the answer is yes.

He's the third option in the Cowboy's passing attack behind Miles Austin and Jason Witten. Not only that but the Cowboys drafted Dez Bryant out of Oklahoma State this year. I see Williams this year as the starter for about 3 weeks before Bryant takes over his position and Roy falls into obscurity just like Mike and Charles did before him.

Take the stats from throughout his career. He's only gone over 1,000 yards once, and that was back in 2006 with Detroit where he also had his most receptions with 82. Only two other times in his 7 year career did he have more than 50 receptions and more than 800 yards. Not only that but he's never hit double digits in touchdowns, even though his size does lead you to believe he'd be a red zone target. His average TD's in those 7 season has been 5.2 per. Not only are his numbers not stellar, neither is his presence on the field.

At age 28 a wide out of his ilk should be getting 80+ 1000+ and 8+ per year, but he just isn't that type of receiver. And now with new options in play for the Cowboys, his numbers will get even worse.

So on draft day, when you are looking for a good 3rd, 4th or even 5th wide out, I heed you this advice; don't draft him. The Nerd rankings have him listed as the 67th best wide out available currently, which tells me even in 12 team leagues he'd be a 6th option. Just not someone you need.

Let someone else draft him on name recognition, just don't be that guy!

Draft Round: FA (Means don't draft this fool)
