The save was Miller's second of the season. He walked one batter, but was able to dispatch the Guardians on 18 pitches. The Tigers leader in saves is Jason Foley, but he pitched the seventh inning. Foley has only two saves in July and a total of four saves since May 24th. He had 11 saves on May 24th, but hasn't had the same kind of usage since then. Maybe the Tigers are showcasing Miller ahead of the trade deadline and Foley will get more reliable usage for a fantasy closer in August and September, but right now it's a frustrating situation of fantasy managers.
Tigers' closer Jason Foley was called upon to put out a fire in the eighth inning, so it was Holton who was entrusted the ninth to face the bottom of the Jays' lineup. The 28-year-old southpaw made it look easy in this one, getting Daulton Varsho on a ground ball to second, Alejandro Kirk on a fly ball to left and Ernie Clement on a comebacker to end it. On the season, Holton has compiled a 3.29 ERA, 0.88 WHIP and a 39/11 K/BB ratio over 52 innings to go with four wins and three saves.
Alex Faedo started the ninth inning with a two-run advantage, but he allowed run and had the tying run at third base with only one out when manager A.J. Hinch turned to Foley. The 28-year-old right-hander got Tyler Freeman to bounce to first baseman Gio Urshela who cut down the potential tying run at the plate. After an intentional walk and a wild pitch put two runners back in scoring position, Foley got Austin Hedges to ground out to short to end it. Foley now sports a 3.41 ERA to go with 15 saves in 17 chances on the season.
It was Miller's first save of the season. He entered a 1-0 game in the ninth inning and slammed the door on the Guardians as he retired the side in order. This development is potentially concerning for Jason Foley, who was available after not pitching on Sunday. Foley had allowed at least one run in three of his last four appearances and now Miller got his first save of the year. Perhaps the Tigers are merely showcasing Miller ahead of the trade deadline, but this is a situation to monitor going forward.
Ah the ole one-out save. Chafin came in after Jason Foley was unable able to get through the ninth to pick up his first save of the 2024 campaign. It's not crazy to think he'll get another shot at a save before the season comes to a close, but he certainly won't get enough to suggest him as a fantasy pickup.
