The Tigers are using the same lineup they did Wednesday against the Astros. That means McKinstry at third, even though Matt Vierling was getting most of the playing time there at the end of the regular season. Vierling is again starting in right over Wenceel Perez. The lineup: CF Parker Meadows, DH Kerry Carpenter, RF Vierling, LF Riley Greene, 2B Colt Keith, 1B Spencer Torkelson, 3B McKinstry, SS Trey Sweeney, C Jake Rogers.
The Astros put out their lefty-killer lineup Tuesday, but with right-hander Hunter Brown on the bump, Carpenter will hit near the top of the lineup with Justyn-Henry Malloy. Zach McKinstry is in the lineup in place of Wenceel Perez, and Colt Keith takes over second for Andy Ibanez. The full lineup for the Tigers as they look to clinch a spot in the ALDS against the Guardians: Parker Meadows CF, Carpenter DH, Matt Vierling RF, Riley Greene LF, Keith 2B, Spencer Torkelson 1B, McKinstry 3B, Trey Sweeney SS and Jake Rogers behind the plate.
It's the regular lefty-killer lineup for the Tigers, as they'll take on Framber Valdez in the first of a best-of-three series. The full lineup for Detroit: Matt Vierling 3B, Justyn-Henry Malloy DH, Greene LF, Andy Ibanez 2B, Wenceel Perez RF, Spencer Torkelson 1B, Jake Rogers C and Trey Sweeney hitting ninth at shortstop.
With the Rays starting left-hander Tyler Alexander, the Tigers will rest Carpenter, who doesn't play against left-handed pitching. Matt Vierling will move to left field, Riley Greene will slide to DH, and Andy Ibanez will bat lead-off and play third base.
Greene drew a walk to lead off the second inning and scored on a triple by Dillon Dingler. He later knocked a base hit in the sixth and singled in the eighth before scoring on a sacrifice fly by Colt Keith. With the game tied in extra innings, Greene came up in a big spot, leading off the tenth with a go-ahead base hit and scored once again on a sacrifice fly by Zach McKinstry. The 23-year-old outfielder has had a solid season, slashing .264/.353/.489 with 24 homers, 80 runs scored, 72 RBI, and four steals across 556 plate appearances.
