Diaz got the call to protect a three-run lead in the final frame at loanDepot park and immediately got into hot water by loading the bases with only one out. He managed to limit the damage to just a single run by coaxing a ground out from Josh Bell before getting Jake Burger to pop out to end it. The 30-year-old stopper hasn't reverted to his previous lights-out form from previous seasons, but his return has helped stabilize New York's shaky high-leverage mix. He's converted five of six save chances since returning from the injured list back on July 6.
Manaea didn't do much differently in this poor start than any of his previous good ones, the Marlins just put the ball in play and kept finding holes. Most of their hits came on objectively good pitches as Manae lived on the edges as he often does. That is, until Jake Burger parked a belt-high two-seamer over the center-field fence. This was the first time Manaea allowed more than three earned runs since June 8th.
Possibly auditioning for a new team, Burger was all over Sean Manaea in this one. His double was scorched at 114.0 MPH and his home run put a bow on Manaea's outing. He's slowly put a disastrous first chunk of the season behind him with eight homers and a 114 wRC+ since May 24th.
Burger went 4-for-5 with a home run, four RBI and two runs scored in Saturday's 10-6 loss to the Reds.
Burger singled for his other three hits and he scored two runs. The 28-year-old has been a massive disappointment in 2024, but this was a nice reminder of the offensive upside. With one game left until the All-Star break, Burger has 10 homers, 35 RBI and a line of .225/.265/.368.
