Four days after catching one ball on two looks, Smith tied De'Von Achane for the team lead in targets. It was a function of the Dolphins being afraid to throw down the field vs. the Bills' two-high safety looks. It was also accelerated after Tua Tagovailoa departed with a third quarter concussion. With Tagovailoa likely looking at a lengthy absence, Smith is probably going to have more check-down/YAC upside than he did before. He's worth keeping around as a TE2 streamer option ahead of Week 3 vs. the Seahawks.
Smith ran a route on just 19 of the Dolphins' 48 drop backs on the day. He functioned primarily as a blocking fullback after Miami listed him as a fullback on the team's official depth chart. It's hard to see a path to fantasy usefulness for Smith in 2024.
Dolphins WR Malik Washington (quad) is out for Sunday s opener vs. the Jaguars. The rookie went from limited practices on Wednesday and Thursday to no practice on Friday. With WR Odell Beckham on the PUP list, Miami is woefully thin at WR entering Week 1. Braxton Berrios will be the No. 3 WR on Sunday. Grant DuBose is currently the only other WR on the roster besides Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle. RB De Von Achane and TE Jonnu Smith could be big parts of the passing game this weekend.
Shortly after the Dolphins listed Smith as the team's No. 2 fullback, the Miami Herald reported that the team plans to increase its 12 personnel usage this year while creating mismatches with Smith on both jet sweeps and screen passes. The Dolphins No. 3 pass-catcher role is up for grabs with Odell Beckham on the physically unable to perform (PUP) for at least the first four games. Smith has a chance to emerge as a TE1 in the Dolphins' fantasy-friendly passing attack.
