It was a typical Mike Williams catch, a jump ball in tight coverage to earn a huge first-down conversion. We know the 29-year-old is still not fully healthy after season-ending surgery last year, but the Jets could use another option across from Garrett Wilson, and Williams could find himself in a crucial role in the passing attack in a few weeks. It's hard to put him in the lineup until we see that he's back to full health though.
Lazard was second among Jets wide receivers in targets, and Aaron Rodgers looked his way on a couple of key third-down attempts. Unfortunately, it seems like Week 1 was an anomaly. It's hard to see Lazard holding off Mike Williams for targets once the former Los Angeles Chargers wide receiver is fully healthy.
It hasn't been a great start to the season for Wilson and Aaron Rodgers, who have connected 10-of-17 times for just 117 total yards and no touchdowns. Given the lack of receiving depth behind him, Wilson is seeing plenty of coverage shifted his way from opposing defenses which has led Rodgers to take short passes to his running backs. Wilson is undeniably talented and is making plays when given the chance, but until Mike Williams gets healthy and can attract some defensive attention away from Wilson, we may not see that game-breaking week from the 24-year-old wide receiver.
It was a methodical game for Rodgers, and he was his confident and poised self in guiding a game-winning drive late in the fourth quarter, but he certainly didn't excite from a fantasy perspective. It's unclear whether Rodgers is rusty or the Jets' offensive gameplan is uninspiring, but the 40-year-old seemed to have happy feet in the pocket and only averaged 5.9 yards per completion. Of his 18 completions, only eight of them went to wide receivers, and Rodgers didn't take many shots down the field. Perhaps the improved health of Mike Williams will open up the Jets offense a little more, but, as of now, this seems to still be a ball control offense that will rely on the strength of its defense and rushing attack to win games. That will lower the fantasy ceiling for Rodgers.
Wide receiver Mike Williams played a minor role in the Jets offense during their season-opening loss to the 49ers, but the team says that they'll be working to change that in the coming games.
