Whether or not this means Cook will be elevated for Week 5's matchup against the Steelers is to be determined, but it sounds like the Cowboys are ready to explore other internal options at running back. McCarthy also noted that Rico Dowdle and Ezekiel Elliott "haven't been given a lot of opportunities" and "haven't done anything to warrant their opportunities decreasing right now." Both Dowdle and Elliott are averaging less than 4.0 YPC on the season, and its Dowdle who is currently leading the team in rushing yards (134). Cook averaged 3.2 YPC with the Jets last season and has long been trending toward washing out in the league. That he wasn't able to be elevated to the Cowboys' 53-man roster prior to this is somewhat concerning about where he's at now as a player. We'll see if he ends up taking in-game touches soon, but it sounds like Cook is slowly working his way into the Cowboys' backfield rotation.
Ezekiel Elliott has received just 15 and 10 snaps the last two weeks as Rico Dowdle grabs more of the work, with Yousuf writing: "There may be value that Elliott brings to the Cowboys -- leadership, locker room camaraderie, pass protection -- but it has not been in the form of purely running the football." The writing on the wall here seems to read that Elliott might be the first back on the chopping block if and when the Cowboys give practice-squad back Dalvin Cook a shot. On that, Yousuf adds, Cook's time "could be coming soon." Elliott belongs on fantasy waiver wires.
The team will carry three running backs and a fullback on the game-day roster for the third consecutive week, with Ezekiel Elliott and Rico Dowdle likely splitting snaps relatively evenly against the Ravens. Cook was signed to the team's practice squad two weeks prior to the start of the season and have yet to elevate him or give him a spot on the 53-man roster through three weeks of the regular season.
The Cowboys are averaging less than four yards per carry through the first two weeks of the season, but it doesn't sound like they are planning to shake up the makeup of their backfield for this week's game against the Ravens.
