Dolphins WR Malik Washington (quad) is out for Sunday s opener vs. the Jaguars. The rookie went from limited practices on Wednesday and Thursday to no practice on Friday. With WR Odell Beckham on the PUP list, Miami is woefully thin at WR entering Week 1. Braxton Berrios will be the No. 3 WR on Sunday. Grant DuBose is currently the only other WR on the roster besides Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle. RB De Von Achane and TE Jonnu Smith could be big parts of the passing game this weekend.
Washington looks like the early favorite to start as the Dolphins' WR3 over the season's first four games with Odell Beckham Jr. sidelined. He's been limited in each of his two practices to start the week but doesn't appear to be at risk of missing Sunday's game. We'll see how things shake out on Friday, but a third practice will be a good sign for Washington's availability. Even if he's active, fantasy managers shouldn't be looking to him as an option, even in the deepest of leagues.
Shortly after the Dolphins listed Smith as the team's No. 2 fullback, the Miami Herald reported that the team plans to increase its 12 personnel usage this year while creating mismatches with Smith on both jet sweeps and screen passes. The Dolphins No. 3 pass-catcher role is up for grabs with Odell Beckham on the physically unable to perform (PUP) for at least the first four games. Smith has a chance to emerge as a TE1 in the Dolphins' fantasy-friendly passing attack.
Washington should be good to go as long as he gets upgraded to a full practice before the end of the week. With Odell Beckham on the PUP list to start the season, the WR3 job in Miami is up for grabs. Though the Dolphins don't run much 11-personnel compared to the rest of the league, the offense as so efficient that even part-time players show up for the occasional spike week. If Washington emerges as the clear third receiver to start the year, he could make for an interesting FLEX play once bye weeks roll around.
Dolphins wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. did not get on the field at all during training camp or the preseason and he won't be getting on the field in the first four weeks of the regular season either.
