Colston Loveland
2025 Season Outlooks
Loveland was selected by Chicago in the first round of April's draft. He is a young, productive tight end with big-time statistical upside. When active last season, he handled 37% of Michigan's targets and a class-high 40% of the air yards. Only 21 years old, Loveland is one of the youngest players entering the league, but he figures to play a sizable offensive role right out of the gate. Chicago is strong at wide receiver and Cole Kmet remains on the roster, but Loveland should see enough work in Ben Johnson's offensive to allow (at least) fringe TE1 production.
Loveland’s 88.5 receiving grade over the last five seasons ranks eighth-best among Power-Five tight ends, behind Brock Bowers, Dalton Kincaid, Charlie Kolar, Michael Mayer, Tyler Warren, Maliq Carr and Sam LaPorta.
The biggest concern around Loveland was his run blocking. Several receiving tight ends lose snaps in 12 personnel, depending on coaching philosophy. Sam LaPorta didn’t grade well as a blocker in Ben Johnson’s offense the last two seasons, but still played the vast majority of 12 personnel snaps.
Quarterback Caleb Williams' willingness to throw deep targets more than most quarterbacks could lead to some big plays by Loveland. LaPorta led all tight ends in deep receiving yards last season, so Johnson knows how to draw up deep shots to the tight end position.
