A Saints source told The Athletic's Dianna Russini that the "vibes are really, really high" around rookie QB Spencer Rattler. Rattler was a five-star recruit and the No. 1 pro-style QB in the 2019 class, so there's certainly plenty of physical ability here. Russini said that there's currently no QB controversy in New Orleans but added that that could change if QB Derek Carr struggles this season.
In three preseason outings, Rattler threw for 202 yards and one touchdown while completing 52.6 percent of his passes, but his adjusted completion percentage of 69.7 factors out the three drops his receivers had. Rattler also ran seven times for 26 yards and another score. The rookie fifth-rounder could be challenging Derek Carr for snaps at some point in the season, but Carr remains entrenched as the starter for the time being. Under contract through the 2026 season, the Saints have every incentive to see things through with Carr, but any struggles through the midway point of the season could have Dennis Allen and company looking in Rattler's direction.
Observations from all 32 teams' Week 3 preseason showdowns ahead of Tuesday's roster cutdown day
Rattler likely slithered into the No. 2 role with a stunning performance that included four big-time throws and one missed tackle forced. He threaded the needle beautifully on a 21-yard touchdown pass to WR Equanimeous St. Brown. Rattler should be safely stashed on benches in dynasty formats.
The Saints' preseason battle for the No. 2 QB role entered its final phase on Sunday with Haener getting the start over fifth-round rookie Spencer Rattler. Haener likely lost the battle, failing to make a difference in the box score while tallying one turnover-worthy.
