Vikings quarterback J.J. McCarthy cleared concussion protocol Thursday, his final step in returning to the starting lineup in time for Sunday's game against the Commanders.

McCarthy spoke to the media Thursday, indicating that he's out of the concussion protocol, Kevin Seifert of ESPN.com reports.

McCarthy resumed practicing fully yesterday, so today's official clearance makes sense. The error-prone quarterback will attempt to engineer offensive points against the Commanders on Sunday. Opposing quarterbacks have thrown for 289-plus yards in seven games against the Commanders this season, though McCarthy's play gives us no confidence in his ability to join that fantasy-friendly production level.
