Etienne got banged up in Week 5 versus the Colts. He played through the injury but was clearly limited and ceded 13 carries to backup Tank Bigsby. Etienne rushed just six times. He should be back on top of the backfield in Week 6, but Bigsby has out-played him too often to go away, whether or not Etienne is healthy. Part of a dreaded backfield-by-committee, Etienne is a touchdown-based RB2 versus Chicago.
Etienne was held out for part of last week's game due to his shoulder injury and was nursing the same injury earlier this season. Clearly working through something, head coach Doug Pederson said on Thursday that Etienne would remain the team's lead back despite the recent breakout performance from Tank Bigsby, but we'd expect Bigsby to earn more touches in the very near future.
Pederson dismissed questions about whether Tank Bigsby, with his 101-yard, two-touchdown Week 5 performance against the Colts, had taken over as Jacksonville's lead back. "Travis is our guy. Tank had a good game. That's just the way games go," Pederson said. "Happy for Tank. Great for the offensive line, obviously, in some of those situations there. Travis is our guy." Etienne, meanwhile, has struggled with a lingering shoulder injury. Etienne told reporters this week he would "find ways to continue to push through" the discomfort of the shoulder ailment. It's hard to believe Bigsby, the most efficient running back in the NFL this season, won't take on the early-down role while Etienne continues as the team's pass catching back. In Week 6 they'll take on a Bears defense that ranks 17th in rush EPA.
Fantasy football analyst Pranav Rajaram dissects the latest shifts in the running back landscape ahead of Week 6, including the recent takeover of Tank Bigsby in Jacksonville.
Recurring shoulder issue Travis Etienne got popped in the shoulder again and that s why he was held out at the end of the game. Pederson says he ll be okay. (Jordan de Lugo on Twitter) FF Today's Take: Etienne's volume has dipped over the last two games, which has contributed somewhat to Tank Bigsby's resurgence. It would seem as though Jacksonville wants the two backs to split the workload as much as possible and it may be moving in that direction. Etienne will remain the clear starter for the Jags, but it is clear that Bigsby has earned himself a role. As such, Etienne needs to be treated as a RB2 in fantasy until further notice.
