2023 Season Outlooks

Hockenson immediately became Minnesota’s No. 2 target after last year’s trade. We’re not betting that the offseason swap of Adam Thielen for rookie Jordan Addison will alter that much. Hockenson looks like a fairly safe PPR bet in a pass-happy offense.

What We Learned Last YearHockenson spent the first half of 2022 with the Lions. He was traded to the Vikings before the NFL trade deadline and finished as the TE2 overall in PPR scoring. He finished 10 games within the top 10 of weekly scoring at the position last season, with five other games in the top 24.Hockenson’s opportunities increased after the trade:Lions (Week 1-8): 6.1 targets (18.1%), 54.9 receiving yards (16.5% air yards share), 0.5 TDs, 11.6 PPR points per gameVikings (Week 9-18): 8.6 targets (21.8% target share), 50.2 receiving yards (19.2% air yards share), 0.3 TDs, 12.7 PPR points per gameAmong 27 TEs who saw 50+ targets last season, Hockenson ranked ninth in Pro Football Focus receiving grade, seventh in yards per route run (1.60), and fourth in yards after catch (426).
What to Expect in 2023Bet on the Vikings remaining pass happy. They ranked fifth in the league in pass rate in HC Kevin O’Connell’s first season. They replaced departed WR Adam Thielen with first-round WR Jordan Addison. And Minnesota booted lead RB Dalvin Cook. We’ll see whether Addison’s arrival adds any target challenge for Hockenson. We’re betting the rookie will battle fourth-year WR K.J. Osborn for opportunities more than siphoning work from Hockenson.

Hockenson is entering his first full season with Minnesota after he was acquired from Detroit following Week 8 last season. The 2019 first-round pick was a solid producer with the Lions, but really hit his stride after the trade. From Week 9 on, Hockenson averaged 14.1 fantasy PPG, which trailed only Travis Kelce at the position. His 86 targets (9.6 per game, 24% team share) during the span ranked fifth in the entire league. Including the playoffs, Hockenson saw 10-plus targets in five of his 10 full games with the Vikings (he saw 10-plus in seven of 47 games in Detroit). A boost in TDs would be nice (he's yet to clear six in a season), but with only Justin Jefferson certainly ahead of him for targets in an offense that ranks sixth in TDs during the Kirk Cousins era, the 26-year-old has found his way to top-five (perhaps top-three) status at the position.
