The Lions offensive line wasn't getting the same push they did against the Rams in Week 1. Tampa Bay's defensive front was stout even without Calijah Kancey and Vita Vea. Montgomery ran hard as he appears to be in tremendous shape this year, but managed just 3.2 yards a carry. Four receptions and a one yard touchdown run saved his day from a fantasy perspective. Montgomery will continue to set the tone in the Lions backfield in Week 3 against the Cardinals on the road.
Gibbs out-carried his backfield mate David Montgomery 13-11, though Montgomery converted on a short touchdown run. Gibbs caught all seven of his targets, but was mostly stifled in the receiving game as he gained only 22 yards. He was used again and again as a check down option with Detroit's downfield passing game nonexistent after a 50 yard pass to Jameson Williams on the first drive. PPR scam? You bet. Gibbs had more juice in the running game as he averaged 6.5 yards per carry. Expect the even split in the Detroit backfield to continue into the Lions' Week 3 road matchup with the Cardinals.
Dave Helman sits down to recap the Detriot Lions' victory over the Los Angeles Rams. Within the segment, Helman gives praise to players such as Jameson Williams, Matthew Stafford & David Montgomery.
Montgomery started hot in this one, starting the game as the primary ball carrier before taking a backseat to Jahmyr Gibbs in the second half. Overtime was a different story as the team rode Montgomery's fierce between-the-tackles running to the game-winning score on the first possession. The backfield split between Montgomery and Gibbs remained fairly even as the former saw 18 opportunities to the 17 of the latter. Expect a similar split moving forward, which largely places a cap on the weekly floor and ceiling of Gibbs in the process. That said, Gibbs could see more usage in Week 2 when the team hosts the Buccaneers' stout run defense in Detroit.
Gibbs scored the first touchdown of the game on the first play following the two-minute warning, sending the Lions into the half with a 10-3 lead. He would then see most of the backfield work in the third quarter before ceding the bulk of the usage to David Montgomery in overtime. Expect a relatively even split in backfield opportunities for the Lions moving forward, although Gibbs could have the upper hand for touches against the stout run defense of the Buccaneers in Week 2.
