With Thairo Estrada (wrist) heading back to the injured list, Schmitt will get another chance to prove his mettle at the big-league level. So far this season, the 25-year-old infielder has hit just .220/.238/.390 with two homers and five RBI in 41 at-bats with the Giants.
What has already been a miserable and disappointing season for the 28-year-old infielder will now get a bit worse with another trip to the injured list. No word yet on how long Estrada will be shelved for this time around. Casey Schmitt was recalled from Triple-A Sacramento to take his place on the active roster.
The Giants placed Estrada on the 10-day injured list Friday with a sprained left wrist.
Fitzgerald has as many homers in his last three games, dating back to July 9, as he did in his previous 44 appearances as a major leaguer. Saturday's homer came in his first start in eight games and earned him a rare start against a righty today; he had played exclusively against lefties since being recalled last month. The Giants will probably give him more time at the expense of Brett Wisely and Thairo Estrada while he remains hot.
Quantrill allowed a two-run triple in the second to Thairo Estrada and another run scored an inning later on a fielder's choice off the bat of Patrick Bailey. The right-hander threw exactly 100 pitches -- 59 of those for strikes -- with two walks and five strikeouts. There were some clunkers for Quantrill in the first half of 2024, but there have been some solid moments for the former first-round pick in his first (possibly last) year as a Colorado hurler. He's scheduled to face Boston on Wednesday.
