Diaz struck out Josh Lowe in a grueling, eight-pitch at-bat to start the 10th inning and wound up stranding the ghost runner on second base. It's been an uneven season for Diaz and this was his first save in more than three weeks.
Rodriguez was excellent against the Rays on Wednesday. He held them without a hit through four perfect innings before Randy Arozarena doubled to start the fifth. Josh Lowe followed with a single to bring in a run. Rodriguez recorded two outs in the sixth and left with a runner on. The inherited runner would come in to score to tie the game, saddling Rodriguez with a no-decision. The 27-year-old right-hander has now allowed two runs or fewer in each of his last four starts. He'll take a 3.69 ERA, 1.26 WHIP, and a 42/19 K/BB ratio across 39 innings into a start against the Orioles in Baltimore on Monday.
Arozarena had the first hit of the game for the Rays, leading off the fifth inning with a double. He'd come around to score on a single by Josh Lowe. He later tied the game with a base hit in the sixth. Arozarena then drew a walk and stole second before scoring a run in the ninth. The 29-year-old outfielder is slashing .213/.319/.398 with 15 homers, 45 runs scored, 36 RBI, and 16 steals across 404 plate appearances.
The Rays got to Berrios in the second inning when right fielder Josh Lowe singled to drive in Randy Arozarena. Berrios later fell victim to Brandon Lowe in the fifth inning when Lowe smashed a 408-foot homer to plate Richie Palacios and push the Rays' lead to 3-0. Berrios would strike out Randy Arozarena in the following at-bat but was pulled in favor of Brandon Little after tossing 97 pitches. If not for a flurry of walks, Berrios may have seen a longer outing. The veteran righty has allowed three or more earned runs in each of his last four starts and has been held under five innings in his last two outings. He'll hope for a better outing in his next start, which is scheduled for Sunday against the Rangers.
The stolen base was Lowe's eighth of the season. He's 6-for-32 (.187) with one RBI in 10 games in July. The stolen base was certainly a positive, but Lowe is hitting .217 with a .670 OPS on the year. A far cry from the production we saw out of him last year when he hit .292 with 20 home runs.
