Fairchild pinch-hit for Jake Fraley with the left-handed Garrett Cleavinger on the mound for Tampa Bay. He popped up then but brought the game-winning run around in extras. Fairchild is not an every day player as is and will lose some more playing time with TJ Friedl coming off the injured list.
Fraley filled up the box score in the Reds' victory over the Braves to start the day -- going 3-for-5 with a homer, two RBI and a stolen base -- but that wasn't enough to earn his way into the lineup against left-hander Chris Sale for the second game of the twin bill. Austin Slater will start in right field and will bat seventh as the Reds look to sweep the doubleheader on Wednesday.
The 28-year-old was called up to be the 27th man in a doubleheader on Wednesday, and the start did not go as planned. He allowed five extra-base hits, including home runs to Jake Fraley and Elly De La Cruz. He now has a 15.26 ERA and is unlikely to be making any more starts.
Fairchild was on the injured list with a spine disc injury. Now that he's back he should see most of his playing time come against left-handed pitching. The Reds are going to keep playing Rece Hinds everyday and Jake Fraley and Will Benson will both play against right-handed pitching. Edwin Rios was designated for assignment as the corresponding move. Fairchild is hitting .224 with five home runs and 23 RBI in 170 at-bats this year.
The 29-year-old outfielder is back in uniform on Wednesday night, though he is not in the Reds' lineup for their showdown against the Rockies and left-hander Kyle Freeland. Blake Dunn was optioned to Triple-A Louisville in a corresponding move on Wednesday.
