Don't let the save fool you; this was not a great outing for Phillips. The right-hander has struggled of late, particularly against left-handed hitters, and has seen his velocity dip which has led to fewer save chances. On Tuesday, Alex Vesia started the ninth inning with the Dodgers up 5-1 but loaded the bases with nobody out. He did retire the next two batters, but Dave Roberts decided to go to Phillips with Jorge Soler coming up. Phillips walked him on four pitches, bringing in a run. He was then able to get LaMonte Wade Jr. to ground out and earn his 15th save of the season, but only three of the nine pitches Phillips threw were for strikes, so he's not out of the woods yet with his struggles.
As he often does, Duran made it look easy in this one, getting Michael Conforto on a swinging third strike, LaMonte Wade Jr. on a ground ball to second base and Mike Yastrzemski on a ground ball to shortstop to end it. The 26-year-old hurler now boasts a 2.93 ERA, 0.95 WHIP and a 29/10 K/BB ratio over 30 2/3 innings on the season to go along with five victories and 15 saves.
Giants manager Bob Melvin said that Wade Jr. is battling some lingering "hamstring tightness" so the team will go with Wilmer Flores at first base. Melvin believes that Wade Jr. could be back against the Twins, but the team will simply manage his hamstring tightness before he gets four days off over the All-Star break.
Even though right-hander Kevin Gausman is on the mound, the Giants will go with Wilmer Flores at first base over Wade Jr. It's a curious move since, even though Gausman has slight reverse-splits over his career, lefties are hitting much better off of him this season with a .275 batting average against and .485 slugging percentage.
Flores returns to San Francisco's corner infield mix after missing a couple weeks due to left knee tendinitis. The 32-year-old figures to play regularly against left-handed pitching as a natural platoon partner at first base with LaMonte Wade Jr.
