Finnegan got the call to protect a three-run lead in the final frame and made things interesting by giving up a run-scoring single to Nick Gonzales with one out in the frame before walking Rowdy Tellez to load the bases with only one out. Just when things started looking bleak, he managed to wriggle out of the jam and preserve the victory by coaxing a game-ending double-play ball from ensuing batter Bryan De La Cruz. It hasn't always been pretty, but Finnegan has been one of the better closers in the fantasy landscape this season, converting 35 of his 40 save opportunities.
Tellez smacked a two-run homer -- his 13th big fly of the season -- off veteran reliever Jacob Barnes after teammate Nick Gonzales broke up a potential combined no-hitter with a ground-ball single up the middle with two outs in the seventh inning off Robert Garcia. He also drew a walk in the ninth inning off Nationals closer Kyle Finnegan as well.
Rowdy Tellez's two-run home run (13)
Gonzales knocked a base hit in the first inning, then led off the second inning with a double before scoring on a single by Andrew McCutchen. He added a third hit in the eighth and scored once again on a single by Rowdy Tellez. The 25-year-old second baseman is slashing .266/.298/.397 with five homers, 40 RBI, and three steals across 286 plate appearances.
Tellez was on the bench against left-hander Matthew Boyd to start this one. He entered the game as a pinch-hitter with the bases loaded in the eighth inning and gave Pittsburgh a pair of insurance runs with a two-run single. The 29-year-old slugger is slashing .259/.305/.415 with 12 homers and 50 RBI across 370 plate appearances.
