After shutting down the Braves in his Padres debut, Pivetta wasn't able to quiet the hot-hitting Cubs on Saturday, going just three innings in the loss. After a scoreless first frame, his control got away from him with three walks and a base hit in the second, bringing two runs in for Chicago. Dansby Swanson took him deep for a solo homer in the third. An error and two hits loaded the bases before Pivetta struck out the final two batters to limit any more damage. The 32-year-old right-hander will look to bounce back in a good matchup against the Rockies in San Diego on Friday.
Swanson broke his two-game hitless streak with a single to lead off the second inning before scoring on a base hit by Carson Kelly. He then took Nick Pivetta deep for a solo shot in the third. The 31-year-old shortstop is 10-for-43 on the season with three homers, seven RBI, and a steal.
Kelly had another excellent day at the plate. He got the scoring started in the second inning, knocking a base hit to score Dansby Swanson. After drawing a walk in the fifth, Kelly took Alek Jacob deep for a three-run blast in the sixth. The 30-year-old backstop has been productive in his time split behind the plate with Miguel Amaya. He's hit two homers while collecting ten RBI across 22 plate appearances.
The left-hander struck out five opposing hitters on the afternoon while issuing three walks. All of the damage that was done against him came via the long ball, with Dansby Swanson crushing a solo shot in the second inning and Seiya Suzuki adding the dagger with a two-run blast in the sixth. Rodriguez generated eight swings and misses on 85 pitches on the day -- six of them on his changeup -- while recording a CSW of 26 percent. He'll try once again to get in the win column when he does battle against the Nationals in Washington on Saturday.
