It's a shame Manaea couldn't hang on for one more out as the Mets ran away with this victory. He got through the first two batters before walking Juan Soto, hitting Aaron Judge, and walking Austin Wells. Adam Ottavino came in to retire the right-handed Anthony Volpe and Manaea lost the opportunity for a win. This was a very regular Manaea start otherwise with spotty command and very little hard contact.
Juan Soto hit a solo home run that gave the New York Yankees a 2-1 lead over the New York Mets.
The Yankees are trying anything at this point. After having Ben Rice lead off for a while, the Yankees had Jahmai Jones in the leadoff spot on Tuesday against a left-handed pitcher and now will give Torres a shot. The 27-year-old has been mildly better in July but is still hitting just .255 in 14 games in the month with one home run and no steals. At this point, the Yankees are hoping for anybody aside from Aaron Judge and Juan Soto to step up and get some hits.
Diekman got the call to work the final frame of Tuesday's Subway Series opener with Edwin Diaz unavailable after pitching two of the last three days, including a 28-pitch save on Monday against the Marlins. He got Trent Grisham to fly out before issuing a four-pitch walk to ensuing batter Juan Soto. He picked up a massive strikeout of Aaron Judge before winning a seven-pitch battle with rookie Ben Rice to end the contest.
All-Star outfielder Juan Soto responded to Mets right-hander Luis Severino's jab that Soto's Yankees "only have two good hitters."
