It was Arenado's 10th home run on the season in what has been a disappointing year for the veteran. Still, he was able to turn on a pitch from Skenes and hit it 385 feet at 102.7 mph for the solo shot. His presence every day in the middle of the Cardinals' lineup makes it worth holding onto him in deeper formats, even though he may be on the downswing of his career.
Skenes struck out eight and walked nobody on the day, but he made two crucial mistakes, including a solo home run to Nolan Arenado. The Pirates kept him in with that game tied 1-1 in the ninth inning, but Skenes allowed a lead-off double to Michael Siani and then an RBI single to Alec Burleson that would be the difference. The impressive rookie posted a solid 20 percent whiff rate and 32 percent CSW and will get another tough test next week against the Astros.
Nolan Arenado launched a homer off of Paul Skenes as the St. Louis Cardinals struck first against the Pittsburgh Pirates.
Contreras caught both games of the doubleheader Saturday so it's no surprise to see that he gets a day off for the finale against his former team. Pedro Pages is the starting catcher with Nolan Arenado the designated hitter and Brandon Crawford manning the hot corner.
Contreras victimized his former team in the opening inning with a 364-foot (103.9 mph EV) solo shot off of Javier Assad. He then started the Cardinals' go-ahead rally in the eighth inning with a leadoff walk and then raced home on Nolan Arenado's go-ahead two-run single. He's having an impressive season at the dish, slashing .273/.405/.517 with 10 homers, 24 RBI and three stolen bases in only 50 games.
