It's unclear exactly what happened, but Tellez was replaced by Michael Taylor with Connor Joe sliding over to cover first base prior to the start of the eighth inning. The 29-year-old slugger had hustled out an infield single in the prior half inning, so perhaps that's when the injury occurred. Tellez went 3-for-5 with a pair of RBI in a losing effort there. Expect the Bucs to provide an update on his status on Thursday.
The Pirates used him in right field to give Bryan De La Cruz a day off today. Joe played regularly for a time after getting off to a hot start in April, but as his numbers fell off, he went back to starting only against southpaws. The team might be open to expanding his role again, but it probably won't lead to mixed-league value.
Steele ran into trouble in the first inning of this one. After allowing back-to-back singles to start the frame, Steele would retire Nick Gonzales on a ground ball, but a sacrifice fly by Oneil Cruz on the following at-bat gave the Pirates an early 1-0 lead. Steele would then walk Connor Joe to put runners on the corners, which followed with an RBI double by Bryan de La Cruz. He would escape the inning with just the two earned runs and settled in to pitch four scoreless frames before being pulled after the fifth inning. Steele has allowed two earned runs or less in his last five outings and is boasting a 0.00 ERA on the month. He'll look to keep things going in his next start, which will be a rematch with the Pirates on Monday.
Bart was the designated hitter Sunday and drove in a run, but he was unable to continue after hobbling while trying to beat out the fielder's choice grounder. Connor Joe has taken over for Bart.
