Gonzales hit the injured list back in late July with a left groin issue, but should be back with the Pirates by the end of the month. The 25-year-old could wind up taking over at the hold corner with Ke'Bryan Hayes back on the injured list.
Ke'Bryan Hayes, a Gold Glove winner a year ago, has struggled to hit with power at the plate most of this season.
The Pittsburgh Pirates have placed third baseman Ke'Bryan Hayes on the 10-day injured list with lower back inflammation.
Hayes finally provided some confirmation that he's been dealing with back issues all season. It seemed like a safe assumption after he did miss time early on, especially with the way his defense has declined along with his offense. There's been no indication yet whether he'll attempt a return next month or if he might undergo surgery. With Hayes out, the Pirates will likely play Jared Triolo regularly for now. Nick Gonzales could return from a groin injury next week and take over at second, with Isiah Kiner-Falefa moving to third.
The Pirates placed Hayes on the 10-day injured list Monday with low-back inflammation, Noah Hiles of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.
