NBC SportsMitch Haniger clubbed his ninth home run of the season on Wednesday, but it wasn't enough to power the Mariners to victory over the Angels.

Haniger opened the scoring in the contest with a 405-foot solo shot off of Griffin Canning in the second inning, but that proved to be the extent of their offense in the contest. The 33-year-old outfielder finished the day 1-for-2 plus a walk and is now hitting .207/.287/.342 with nine long balls and 35 RBI on the season.

NBC SportsGriffin Canning pitched well in a no-decision against the Mariners on Wednesday afternoon, allowing just one run on four hits over his five innings of work.

Canning piled up six strikeouts on the day while issuing three free passes. The lone tally against him came on a solo homer off the bat of Mitch Haniger in the second inning. That sole run was enough to put him in line for a loss until the Angels scratched out a run of their own in the eighth. Canning got 11 whiffs on 94 pitches on the day -- five of those on his changeup -- while posting a CSW of 23 percent. He'll look to build off of this strong outing when he totes a 5.04 ERA, 1.42 WHIP and a 79/41 K/BB ratio (110 2/3 innings) into Tuesday's tilt against the Rockies.

NBC SportsMitch Haniger went 0-for-3 with two strikeouts as the Mariners' right fielder on Monday.

Sure, maybe the Mariners didn't need Robbie Ray, who is set to return from Tommy John surgery on Wednesday, but trading him to the Giants for Haniger and Anthony DeSclafani seemed misguided then and looks even worse now with Haniger having turned into this much of a liability. He's batting just .206/.284/.331 in 303 at-bats, and he's proven practically unplayable in right field.

The ScoreReport: Yankees, Mariners among teams eyeing Marlins' Chisholm

The New York Yankees and Seattle Mariners are among the clubs considering trading for Miami Marlins outfielder Jazz Chisholm Jr., according to Jon Heyman of the New York Post."The New York fans would love him, he loves to interact with the crowd," a former member of the Marlins organization told Heyman. "Just your classic super-talented kid who needs a little structure as he can wander off at times."The Marlins are reportedly open to trading Chisholm, who's under club control for an additional two campaigns beyond 2024. Miami owns the second-worst record in baseball after making the playoffs last season.New York's current outfield includes Aaron Judge, Juan Soto, Alex Verdugo, and Trent Grisham. But Chisholm, 26, has also made 155 starts at second base during his five-year career.Meanwhile, Seattle's outfield is comprised of Julio Rodr guez, Luke Raley, Mitch Haniger, and Victor Robles.Chisholm has 12 homers, 42 RBIs, 18 stolen bases, and a .727 OPS over 93 games this season. He was a 2022 All-Star but has struggled to stay healthy, logging a combined 281 contests between 2021-23.Copyright © 2024 Score Media Ventures Inc. All rights reserved. NBC SportsMariners placed OF Dominic Canzone on the 10-day injured list with a right adductor strain.

No word yet on what the MRI turned up, but even if it's not serious, the IL stint was the obvious play with the All-Star break coming up. The Mariners will likely use Mitch Haniger and Jonatan Clase in right field.
