Amaya got the Cubs on the board with a run-scoring single in the sixth inning, trimming their deficit to two runs at 3-1. That would be as close as they would get though. The 26-year-old backstop has had a phenomenal spring, hitting .542 (13-for-24) with a pair of homers and four RBI.
Amaya gave the Cubs a 1-0 lead with an RBI double off Yoshinobu Yamamoto in the second inning. That would be the last run of the game for Chicago with Yamamoto and the impressive Dodgers' bullpen cruising from that point on. It's nice to see some early success for Amaya and it's worth noting that he ended the 2024 season hot, but there's reason to look elsewhere for a starting catcher in the majority of fantasy formats.
Yamamoto's first start of the year was vastly different than his struggle against the Padres in Japan last year. The right-hander gave up an RBI double to Miguel Amaya in the second, but he went unscatched after that frame while striking out four with just one walk. The 26-year-old didn't have his best command, but that's easy to justify on a start that took place in the middle of March. Yamamoto should make his next appearance in the Dodgers next series against the Dodgers beginning March 27.
The Chicago Cubs took a 1-0 lead over the Los Angeles Dodgers in the Tokyo Series after Miguel Amaya's RBI-double in the second inning.
Keito Mombetsu held the Cubs hitless for five innings before the bullpen took over. Former Phillies reliever Nick Nelson was also part of the shutout, throwing a scoreless sixth. The Cubs used a bullpen game in their first Japanese exhibition, with Julian Merryweather starting and no one throwing more than an inning. Michael Busch and Miguel Amaya had the other singles for the Cubs.
