The 25-year-old backstop clobbered a game-tying 404-foot (101.6 mph EV) two-run shot off of Kyle Gibson in the second inning. He also worked a pair of walks in the ballgame, finishing the day 1-for-2 officially. On the season, he's now slashing .201/.266/.288 with three homers and 18 RBI on the season.
The 36-year-old right-hander also allowed two free passes on the night while striking out three. All of the scoring done against him came in the second inning, as Miguel Amaya clubbed a two-run homer, while Nico Hoerner and Seiya Suzuki chipped in run-scoring singles. Gibson generated nine swings and misses on 97 pitches on the night, registering an underwhelming CSW of only 23 percent. He finishes a tumultuous first half with a 7-3 record, 4.16 ERA, 1.36 WHIP and a 96/41 K/BB ratio over 101 2/3 innings through his first 18 starts.
He did make a bad out on the basepaths, but we won't worry about that. The multi-hit game is first since May 28. The Cubs held him out for three straight games to work on his swing some. For one day, at least, it seemed to pay off.
Manager Craig Counsell said Saturday that the Cubs are giving Amaya extra time off to work through his struggles at the plate, Taylor McGregor of Marquee Sports Network reports.
