Adames' home run was his 16th of the season. He blasted a solo shot off Porter Hodge in the eighth inning. Adames is hitting .249 with a .774 OPS, 68 RBI and 12 stolen bases this year.
Adames went 4-for-4 with a two-run home run, a double, a walk, two additional RBI and two total runs scored in Sunday's 9-3 win over the Nationals.
Irvin's tremendous first half fell apart in his last two starts. His ERA rose from 2.80 to 3.49 since Monday and his curveball that has looked so dominant suddenly became mortal. The Brewers jumped on Irvin quickly in this one with back-to-back doubles by Christian Yelich and Willy Adames to plate their first run and Irvin didn't have a single clean inning. It will be critical for him to make some sort of adjustment when he comes back after the break.
This was a huge game for Adames who was never retired and on base five times as the Brewers avoided a sweep heading into the break. This mammoth game was a welcome sight as Adames had been hitting .214 over his last 30 games. His 67 RBI are fourth most in the National League.
Yelich reached three times in the win over the Pirates, starting with single in the first inning before scoring on a double by Willy Adames. He knocked another base hit in the third and stole second for his 21st steal of the season. Yelich reached once again in the sixth with a walk. The 32-year-old outfielder is slashing an outstanding .335/.417/.534 with 11 homers, 43 runs scored, and 41 RBI across 289 plate appearances.
