Don't let the save fool you; this was not a great outing for Phillips. The right-hander has struggled of late, particularly against left-handed hitters, and has seen his velocity dip which has led to fewer save chances. On Tuesday, Alex Vesia started the ninth inning with the Dodgers up 5-1 but loaded the bases with nobody out. He did retire the next two batters, but Dave Roberts decided to go to Phillips with Jorge Soler coming up. Phillips walked him on four pitches, bringing in a run. He was then able to get LaMonte Wade Jr. to ground out and earn his 15th save of the season, but only three of the nine pitches Phillips threw were for strikes, so he's not out of the woods yet with his struggles.
The Giants got an outstanding start from rookie Hayden Birdsong while Jorge Soler and Tyler Fitzgerald provided all the power in a 3-2 win over the Colorado Rockies on Sunday.
Jorge Soler's colossal leadoff blast in Sunday's game against the Colorado Rockies is the longest home run of the 2024 MLB season.
On the plus side, the right-hander racked up seven strikeouts on the evening while allowing just one base on balls. He kept the Giants off the board completely through the first three frames until Mike Yastrzemski broke through with an RBI single in the fourth. He then gave up an RBI single to Jorge Soler in the fifth inning before turning the ball over to the Twins' bullpen. Woods-Richardson generated 10 whiffs on 86 pitches on the evening, posting a solid CSW of 30 percent. The 23-year-old hurler finishes his first half with a 3-1 record, 3.51 ERA, 1.15 WHIP and a 71/24 K/BB ratio across 82 innings in his 16 starts.
Jorge Soler's emergence at the top of the Giants' lineup is critical as San Francisco seeks a second-half playoff push.
