It was a career day for Doyle during Wednesday afternoon's matinee at Coors Field as he delivered a run-scoring single off Red Sox starter Nick Pivetta in the second inning before blasting a grand slam -- his 17th round-tripper of the season -- off reliever Chase Anderson a couple frames later to give Colorado a commanding 19-3 lead at the time. The Rockies finished with 20 runs on 21 hits combined in the one-sided affair. The 26-year-old center fielder has been phenomenal over the last few weeks, batting .310 (36-for-116) with 12 homers, 32 RBI and two steals over his last 30 contests.
Here's what's happening around the league with the trade deadline less than a week away
It's almost impossible to overstate just how good Doyle has been as of late, nor how improved he's been in his second season. The outfielder got Colorado back in the game with his 16th homer of the season with a runner on to make it 3-2 Giants in the sixth. Doyle is going to have some regression, but there just aren't many hitters who have looked better in the month of July than he had. Imagine thinking you would read something like this before the year began.
Google the phrase, "on fire" and you will find a picture of Doyle. He has a whopping six homers in July to go along with 12 RBI and a .485/.585/1.182 slash line. That is ludicrous and there isn't a hotter hitter in baseball right now.
Doyle went 3-for-4 with walk, a double and two solo home runs in Tuesday's 12-6 loss to the Reds.
