Giants outfielder Luis Matos is making a compelling case to be included in San Francisco's Opening Day roster with a standout spring performance.
Matos opened the scoring in the first inning with a towering two-run blast off of left-hander Nestor Cortes. He also grounded out and drew a walk in the ballgame. The 23-year-old outfielder is having himself a strong spring at the plate, hitting .349 (15-for-43) with a pair of homers, 11 RBI and two stolen bases.
The results certainly weren't pretty, though seven of the 11 outs that the 30-year-old southpaw recorded did come via the strikeout. He struggled to keep the ball in the yard in this one as Luis Matos clubbed a two-run homer in the opening inning and David Villar tacked on a solo shot in the third. Through his first two appearances with the Brewers, Cortes sports a troublesome 6.00 ERA, 2.33 WHIP and a 9/3 K/BB ratio over six innings.
