NBC SportsRyne Nelson fanned a career-high nine while limiting the Cubs to one run in 5 2/3 innings in the Diamondbacks' 5-2 victory Friday.

Nelson got some help from home plate umpire Roberto Ortiz on a couple of those strikeouts, but he definitely pitched well today. His previous high for strikeouts was eight, set against Chicago's other team in June. His last six outings have seen him go 4-1 with a 3.29 ERA and a 35/5 K/BB in 41 innings. He still seems a little short of being a mixed-league option, but he's definitely given the Diamondbacks a boost of late.

NBC SportsRyne Nelson will start Friday's second-half opener against the Cubs.

Nelson will take the ball at Wrigley Field to be followed by Zac Gallen and Brandon Pfaadt for the rest of the weekend road series. It'll be interesting to see whether Arizona sticks with rookie Yilber Diaz for the remainder of the second half, especially with Jordan Montgomery (knee) due back at some point in the near future.

NBC SportsRyne Nelson allowed three runs while working seven innings in a no-decision Friday versus the Blue Jays.

Nelson didn't allow a run over the first four innings, but he allowed runners to cross over the next three. It was still a solid effort -- even with the loss -- where he struck out five and didn't issue a walk. Nelson has looked much more effective over the last few outings, and his ERA has dropped from 5.96 on June 6 to a more palatable -- if still not ideal -- 4.98 in the process.

NBC SportsDaulton Varsho (knee) returned to the Blue Jays' starting lineup for Friday's contest against the Diamondbacks.

The dynamic 28-year-old outfielder was pulled from Wednesday's gam due to a left knee contusion and was held out of the Blue Jays' starting lineup on Thursday. It appears to have been only a minor issue though as he's right back out there in left field and will bat fifth against Ryne Nelson and the Diamondbacks on Friday evening in Arizona.
