Caratini had been out since July 20 with a hip flexor strain. He'll resume backing up Yainer Diaz, though with Diaz performing well, he'll likely play less than he did in the weeks before he got hurt.
Diaz gave the Astros a 3-0 lead with a two-run single off Luis Castillo in the third inning. The backstop has driven in 51 runs while hitting 284 with a .719 OPS on the 2024 campaign.
Eovaldi struck out seven and didn't walk anyone. He did allow eight hits, but he was able to keep the Astros off the board outside of a Yainer Diaz single in the first that scored Alex Bregman. There were some jams in this one, but Eovaldi was able to work his magic to wiggle out of them. He ends the first half with a strong 2.97 ERA, and he should continue to be an excellent option after the break.
Diaz drove in the Astros' first run of the night when an RBI single brought home Jose Altuve. The star catcher would later drive in two more runs on an RBI single in the sixth, pushing his RBI total to seven in the month of July. Diaz has been hot as of late, going 9-for-21 (.429) in his last five games.
No word yet on the severity of the injury. It's also unclear when the injury occurred, though it could have been while Alvarez slid into second base while picking up his fifth stolen base of the year in the first inning, or when he slid into home as he was cut down at the plate attempting to score on a ball off the bat of Yainer Diaz. He'll presumably head for further evaluation and the Astros should have an update on his status as soon as more information becomes available.
