Mets manager Carlos Mendoza told reporters it's merely a routine day off for Nimmo, who has started 18 consecutive contests since July 3. The 31-year-old outfielder holds a .781 OPS with 16 homers and nine steals through 96 games. It'll be red-hot Jeff McNeil taking over in left field on Thursday night at Citi Field.
Gil leaned heavily on his slider in this outing, and it was working early on as he carried a shutout into the fifth inning before loading the bases with nobody out. He hit Francisco Lindor with a pitch to bring in a run before striking out Brandon Nimmo and getting J.D. Martinez to fly out to prevent any further damage. He finished with six strikeouts and only handed out one free pass. The 26-year-old breakout sensation will carry a stellar 3.10 ERA, 1.08 WHIP and 124/50 K/BB ratio across 107 1/3 innings (20 starts) into a challenging road tolt on Monday against the Phillies at hitter-friendly Citizens Bank Park.
Feltner gave up two hits, walked five and struck out seven. Feltner had allowed a total of four runs over his last three starts, but the Mets scored four times in the second inning. The damage could've been worse as Feltner was removed in the fourth inning after walking Francisco Lindor and Brandon Nimmo with two outs, but Justin Lawrence escaped the jam. Feltner has a 5.36 ERA on the season and remains off the fantasy radar.
With the score tied at 0-0, Nimmo opened the floodgates with a three-run double off MacKenzie Gore to make it 3-0, and that was all the offense the Mets would need. They scored four more runs, anyway, but still true. Nimmo is already up to 62 RBI on the season, and is enjoying a solid first half of 2024 with a line of .252/.365/.466.
The Mets got six scoreless frames from David Peterson and a three-run double from Brandon Nimmo in a 7-0 win over the Nationals to complete a three-game sweep of Washington at Citi Field.
