Addison Barger hit a grand slam Monday against the Red Sox.His slam off Patrick Halligan was projected at 399 feet. Barger was in the cleanup spot today. He'll likely open up hitting either second, fourth or fifth against righties; presumably either he or Daulton Varsho will bat between George Springer and Vladimir Guerrero Jr. at the top and then it's a matter of whether the Jays would prefer Alejandro Kirk fourth or fifth. Barger also now stands a better chance of playing against lefties with Anthony Santander down. Davis Schneider will almost certainly platoon with Jesus Sanchez in left, and then the Jays can pick their spots on whether Myles Straw should start over Barger against certain lefties.
Better Know Your Blue Jays 40-Man Roster: Davis SchneiderNext up would be Anthony Santander, but he ll be going on the 60-day IL Let s skip to Davis Schneider. Davis Schneider is a 27-year-old, right-handed hitting, left fielder/second baseman. Last year he played 59 games in left and 24 games at second. He was drafted in the 28th round of the 2017. Leo Jimenez struck out both times up Tuesday, leaving him 1-for-6 to open the spring.Jimenez's chances of making the Jays seemed a lot better during that brief window after Anthony Santander went down and before Jesus Sanchez was acquired. He's out of options and the closest thing the Jays would have to a utility infielder on the bench, but they can probably do without him, since Davis Schneider can play second, Addison Barger can play third and Ernie Clement can slide all around the infield. If the Jays put him Jimenez waivers, one imagines someone will take a shot. He's just 24, and he has a .404 OBP in 94 career games in Triple-A. As a major leaguer, he's come in at .207/.303/.332 in 242 plate appearances to date.
The Athletic's Chandler Rome reports that the Blue Jays acquired OF Jesus Sanchez from the Astros for OF Joey Loperfido. This move seems to be directly connected to Anthony Santander being out for six months. Sanchez should slot in as a starter against right-handed pitching since he is a career .253/.324/.450 hitter against RHP with a 111 wRC+. Davis Schneider would then likely platoon with him and start against lefties. Loperfido also has minor league options remaining while Sanchez doesn't, and, as Chandler Rome points out, Sanchez is owed $6.8 million while Loperfido is making the league minimum. This allows the Astros to save money for future potential moves.
