Bryce Elder

On the plus side for any fantasy managers that may have been streaming Elder on Saturday, Elder racked up nine strikeouts while issuing only one base on balls. Most of the damage done against him came early, as the Cardinals scratched out a run in the first inning then added four more in the second -- including a two-run blast off the bat of Nolan Gorman. Elder got 16 swings and misses on 95 pitches in the game -- 10 of those on his slider -- while posting an elite CSW of 42 percent. He'll head back to Triple-A Gwinnett after this one to stay sharp for the next time that he's needed.

Elder draws the starting assignment for Saturday's nightcap, weather permitting, with Atlanta pushing rookie sensation Spencer Schwellenbach back to Sunday's contest. The 25-year-old righty doesn't offer much appeal for fantasy managers as a streaming option since he holds a bloated 5.71 ERA across seven spot starts this season at the highest level.

The 27-year-old tagged Braves' starter Bryce Elder for a 389-foot solo shot in the fifth inning that increased the Cardinals' lead to 6-2. He also added on a two-run single during the Cardinals' three-run rally in the ninth. With his 2-for-5 night, he's now hitting .275/.342/.415 with nine long balls and 48 RBI on the season.

Elder is down with AJ Smith-Shawver coming off the injured list to take his place on the roster. Edler was decent in his spot start against the Diamondbacks on Monday, but he'll return to Gwinnett until/unless Atlanta needs him to pitch in a similar role.

Elder struck out just one and was outpitched by Yilber Diaz tonight, but Grant Holmes, who was stellar for three innings, and the Braves lineup combined to let him off the hook by tying the game in the ninth and then later winning in the 11th. Elder will now return to Triple-A, but he'll again be a rotation option after the break.
