It's a shame Manaea couldn't hang on for one more out as the Mets ran away with this victory. He got through the first two batters before walking Juan Soto, hitting Aaron Judge, and walking Austin Wells. Adam Ottavino came in to retire the right-handed Anthony Volpe and Manaea lost the opportunity for a win. This was a very regular Manaea start otherwise with spotty command and very little hard contact.
Austin Wells and Anthony Volpe hit back-to-back home runs to give the New York Yankees an early lead over the Tampa Bay Rays.
Fairbanks entered with a three-run lead before walking Ben Rice and giving up an RBI double to Juan Soto. That allowed Aaron Judge to come to the plate as the potential tying run. However, Fairbanks got Judge to fly out and then struck out Austin Wells to end the game. It never seems easy with Fairbanks, but he will remain fantasy-relevant as long he remains with the Rays after the trade deadline.
Wells is batting .176 (3-for-17) over his last seven games, but does have two homers during that span. Sadly, that's enough to get him into the cleanup spot for New York at the moment behind rookie Ben Rice and generational sluggers Juan Soto and Aaron Judge, who have been carrying this lineup for weeks.
Trevino has received a PRP injection and is expected to miss extended time. Carlos Narvaez was called up when Trevino landed on the IL, though Austin Wells should handle the bulk of the starts for now. Now that Trevino is facing an extended absence, it's unclear if the Yankees would consider giving Ben Rice time behind the plate. If not, they could look to the trade market this month.
