Justin Sterner delivered a perfect inning during Friday's Cactus League outing against the Brewers. The 29-year-old right-hander finally looked sharp in this one, getting Andrew Vaughn on a fly ball to center, Garrett Mitchell on a swinging third strike and Luis Rengifo on a ground ball to short. Sterner got three whiffs on 11 pitches on the day, posting a CSW of 36 percent. His fastball velocity was in line with what we saw during the 2025 season at 93.1 mph (-0.4 mph). He remains a candidate to open the season in the closer's role for the A's, though he'll probably need to replicate Friday's outing at least a few more times in order to do so.
Michael Lorenzen was knocked around during Thursday's Cactus League start against the Brewers, allowing four runs on six hits in just 2 2/3 innings.Lorenzen also issued a pair of walks in the ballgame while punching out a pair. The Brewers jumped on him right out of the gate as Garrett Mitchell slugged a leadoff home run and Luis Rengifo added a run-scoring single. They tacked on single runs in the second and third innings before the veteran right-hander was mercifully pulled. He got seven whiffs on 65 pitches on the day -- four of those on his sinker -- while posting a CSW of 28 percent. He's likely to crack the Rockies' Opening Day rotation, but Lorenzen should be avoided in all fantasy leagues unless you're streaming against him.
Garrett Mitchell went 2-for-4 with a homer and four RBI on Thursday afternoon, powering the Brewers to a 10-8 victory over the Rockies.Mitchell got the game started with a bang, crushing the first pitch thrown from Michael Lorenzen for a 462-foot (111.5 mph EV) solo shot. He then smacked a bases-clearing double in the fifth inning that gave the Brewers a 7-5 lead. Mitchell also drew a walk in the contest, reaching base safely in three of his four plate appearances. He's off to a terrific start this spring, slashing .286/.500/.867 with a homer, four RBI and a 4/3 K/BB ratio. It looks like he'll open the season as the Brewers' starting center fielder and leadoff hitter, which makes him an intriguing late-round option from a fantasy perspective.
Garrett Mitchell leads bats to 10-8 Brewers spring win over RockiesMitchell homered on the first pitch of the game and had 4 RBIs
Garrett Mitchell started in center field and had a 115-mph single Tuesday against Great Britain.Mitchell's single, which came off Brewers teammate DL Hall, was hit 2.7-mph harder than his high mark as a major leaguer. He's been brought along slowly this spring as he returns from shoulder surgery, but it doesn't seem like he's lost any bat speed. In major league exhibitions to date, he's gone 0-for-4 with three strikeouts and two walks, with his one ball in play being a 108-mph grounder.
