Bassitt uncorked a wild pitch in the opening frame, which allowed an early run to cross the plate, but he was masterful from that point onwards, limiting the Orioles to just seven hits and a pair of walks over five shutout frames. The 36-year-old veteran offers a ton of appeal for fantasy managers as a back-end rotation stabilizer. He'll face off against the Mets on Saturday in his next outing.
Springer struggled through an abysmal spring training at the dish, so it's a positive development to see some signs of life in the early stages of the regular season. The 35-year-old veteran outfielder put Toronto ahead for good during Sunday's low-scoring affair with a two-run single to right-center field against Orioles starter Tomoyuki Sugano, which wound up being enough run support for Chris Bassitt and the Blue Jays' relief corps.
Gausman will be followed by Max Scherzer and Chris Bassitt to close out the season-opening series against the division-rival Orioles. It'll be Bowden Francis taking the ball on Monday night to kick off a three-game series against the Nationals with Opening Day starter Jose Berrios following afterwards.
Bassitt's velocity started down about three mph at the beginning of the spring, but he's back to within one mph of 2024 now. His regular-season debut will come Sunday in the series finale against the Orioles. He's a reliable presence for the Blue Jays and at the back of mixed-league rotations.
Bassitt allowed two hits, walked one and struck out four. He still hasn't reached peak velocity, but that might not happen until a couple of weeks into the regular season. He has a 1.80 ERA this spring anyway.
