Duran ripped a gargantuan 419-foot solo homer -- his 13th big fly of the season -- off Rockies starter Cal Quantrill in the fifth inning before tacking on a two-run triple in the ninth inning as well. The 27-year-old outfielder's remarkable breakthrough campaign continues without showing any signs of slowing down as he's batting .292 (124-for-424) with 73 runs scored, 13 homers, 49 RBI and 22 stolen bases through 101 games.
Duran gave the Red Sox the lead just three pitches into the ballgame as he crushed a 396-foot (104.4-mph EV) two-run shot off of James Paxton in the top half of the first. He also added a two-run double off of Evan Phillips in the ninth that pulled the Red Sox to within four runs at 9-5. The 27-year-old finished the night 2-for-5 and is now slashing .290/.350/.500 with 12 homers, 48 RBI and 22 stolen bases.
The Big Maple racked up seven strikeouts on the evening while issuing four walks. He served up a two-run homer to Jarren Duran before he recorded an out in the ballgame, then kept the Red Sox at bay until the sixth where he put two men on before departing and one of them ultimately scored. Paxton generated 12 whiffs on 95 pitches on the night, posting a respectable CSW of 32 percent. He'll lug a disappointing 4.43 ERA, 1.46 WHIP and a 64/48 K/BB ratio (89 1/3 innings) into Sunday's matchup against the Astros in Houston.
Fresh off winning the All-Star game MVP, Duran gave Boston a 1-0 lead with a solo homer off Gavin Stone. It looked like that would be the game-winner, but the Boston bullpen wasn't able to hold the lead while allowing a grand slam to Freddie Freeman. Duran also doubled to see his slash improve to 286/.344/.488 with 11 homers and 42 RBI.
Boston's Jarren Duran, the All-Star MVP, hit a tiebreaking two-run homer in the fifth inning and the American League beat the National League 5-3 on Tuesday night for its 10th win in the past 11 All-Star Games.
