Ragans gave up six hits, walked two and struck out five. The win was his seventh on the season and third in his last five starts. He was hit hard in the third inning as he allowed a double to Kevin Newman, an RBI double to Alek Thomas and a two-run home run to Ketel Marte. Otherwise, Ragans was able to grind through the rest of his outing to post a quality start despite not having his best stuff. He has a 3.23 ERA on the year. The 26-year-old left-hander is set to face the Cubs at home this weekend.
Thomas' home run was his third of the year. He hit a solo shot off Kyle Hendricks in the fifth inning. Thomas has started the last two games even though it seems like he's sharing playing time with Jake McCarthy. Thomas has some pop in his bat, which could be the separator between him and McCarthy over the course of the rest of the season. Thomas is hitting .214 with a .670 OPS and 12 RBI in 56 at-bats this year.
Hendricks gave up three hits, walked three and struck out two. He was done in by the home run in this one. In the fifth inning, he allowed a solo shot to Alek Thomas before Corbin Carroll took him deep for a two-run dinger. Hendricks isn't a strikeout pitcher and has won just two of his 13 starts this year. He's difficult to roster outside of deeper formats. The 34-year-old right-hander is set to face the Royals on the road next weekend.
Alek Thomas and Corbin Carroll both homered to give the Arizona Diamondbacks a fifth inning lead over the Chicago Cubs.
The good news is Suarez didn't end up with a loss because Paul Sewald was just as bad, if not worse. The bad news is, see above. Suarez was handed a big 7-2 cushion when he came in, but he gave up a grand slam to Alek Thomas -- with the three inherited runners not counting against his ERA, and a two-run blast to Randal Grichuk to give Arizona an 8-7 lead. Suarez was then pulled in favor of Stephen Kolek to prevent further damage. Suarez still has an excellent 1.77 ERA and will remain the San Diego closer, but Friday night was an ugly reminder that he -- and most closers -- are far from infallible.
