Emmanuel Clase suffered a blown save in the ninth inning of this one and Hunter Gaddis, Tim Herrin and Cade Smith had each been used already, so it was Sewald who was tasked with protecting a three-run lead in the home half of the 10th. He looked awfully impressive, getting Kyle Isbel on strikes, Jonathan India on a fly ball to center and Bobby Witt Jr. on a fly out to right to end it. He's got plenty of closing experience and could wind up being the next man up should injury or ineffectiveness befall Clase.
Massey led off the second inning with a triple off of Padres' right-hander Yu Darvish, then trotted home with the Royals' first run as Kyle Isbel grounded out to first base. That would be his only hit in three trips to the plate on the afternoon. The 26-year-old is having a strong spring at the plate, hitting .379 (11-for-29) with four RBI, though he has zero home runs or stolen bases. He also started in left field for the Royals on Thursday and will see time in the outfield in 2025, eventually increasing his eligibility for fantasy purposes.
