Burnes gave up six hits, walked one and struck out five. He was in line for the win before Craig Kimbrel blew the save in the ninth inning. Burnes was on cruise control in the first seven innings while allowing just one run. He started the eighth inning and allowed an RBI single to Xavier Edwards with one out. After Burnes was removed, Edwards came around to score on a double by Bryan De La Cruz. He has a 2.45 ERA on the season. The 29-year-old right-hander is set to face the Blue Jays at home next week.
Edwards went 2-for-3 with a walk, a run scored, an RBI and two stolen bases in Sunday's win over the Reds.
Both of Edwards' hits were singles, and he's certainly not going to impress anybody with his exit velocities, but he was hitting .333/.376/.450 in 119 plate appearances at Triple-A this season and stole 37 bases across two levels last year, so he could provide batting average and speed in deeper fantasy formats.
Edwards had two of the Marlins' six hits on the night and was responsible for their lone run when he drove in Emmanuel Rivera in the fifth on an RBI single. Edwards has hit safely in seven of his eight games in July while going 10-for-29 at the plate.
Hader got the call to protect a one-run margin in the final frame and made things interesting by issuing a one-out walk to Jake Burger. He managed to coax a fielder's choice from Xavier Edwards before fanning lefty-masher Emmanuel Rivera to preserve the victory. It was a much-needed strong outing for the 30-year-old elite closer after giving up runs in four of his previous six outings since June 25.
