It's a rare off day for Candelario, who went 2-for-4 with a pair of RBI during Monday's series opener at Truist Park. It's the first time he's been out of the lineup since June 29, despite the fact he's been playing through some lingering right knee tendinitis this season. It'll be Santiago Espinal taking a turn at designated hitter in his absence.
All four runs were courtesy of the long ball, as he gave up a three-run homer to Tyler Stephenson in the third, and a solo blast to Santiago Espinal an inning later. The southpaw hurler did strike out five, but he allowed seven hits in a start that you'd have to squint awfully hard to find the positive in. Gomber ends his first half with a 4.61 ERA, and outside of the occasional stream against the bottom dwellers, he isn't a viable fantasy starter at this stage of his career.
Espinal also singled. The 29-year-old filled in for Elly De La Cruz and swatted his fifth homer of the year with a solo shot off Austin Gomber. Espinal doesn't play enough or play effectively enough when he's in the lineup (.203/.249/.302) to consider him in any type of fantasy format.
It's a routine day off for Elly and just his second of the season. Santiago Espinal will start in his place at shortstop. Since May 1st, Elly is hitting .238/.324/.418 in 63 games with a 31.4 percent strikeout rate. Of course, he also has 27 stolen bases and seven home runs to go along with it, which keeps him a must-start player in all fantasy leagues.
It sounds like more of a precautionary decision than anything as India will take a seat for Tuesday's contest against the Rockies with Santiago Espinal taking over at the keystone. The 27-year-old second baseman has been one of the hottest hitters in baseball over the last few weeks, batting .321 (34-for-106) with three homers, 16 RBI and three steals over his last 30 games. Fantasy managers should consider him day-to-day for now.
