The 29-year-old Gray has struggled to establish himself in the majors while hitting .207/.264/.369 in 122 plate appearances over three seasons, but he has made nice gains in cutting his strikeout rate in Triple-A the last two years. He has a solid glove, especially at third, and ample power, so he's decent enough infield insurance. He also has one option year left, which the Red Sox will probably take advantage of.
