Schmidt gave up a long homer to Julio Rodriguez in the first, and gave up another roundtripper two innings later to Jorge Polanco. After that he settled down quite nicely before giving up another run after he had exited the game in the seventh. He walked a pair while allowing just three hits, and he was able to strike out six. Schmidt has looked good as of late, and he'll be on the mound Sunday for the Subway Series against the Mets.

Schmidt is scheduled to start Monday's game at Seattle, Chris Kirschner of The Athletic reports.

There had to be at least one scenario in the Juan Soto trade talks that included Schmidt going to San Diego and Michael King staying put, perhaps leading to a reversal of tonight's matchup. The Padres are certainly happy with their return, but Schmidt and King pitched to a draw tonight, with Schmidt striking out four and walking one. Schmidt, who had this outing pushed back a few days by side soreness, will make his next start either Sunday in Sacramento or Monday in Seattle.

Schmidt (side) is listed as the Yankees' probable starter for Tuesday's game against the Padres at Yankee Stadium, Gary Phillips of the New York Daily News reports.
